Where in the World Was Prudence Crandall?

Her Forty Quiet Years, 1834 – 1874

This talk will examine Crandall’s marital and family responsibilities, as well as her frequent moves during the four decades of her marriage to Calvin Philleo. From upstate New York, to Canterbury, Rhode Island to Boston, and most of all in Illinois, Crandall’s continued but regrettably episodic involvement in education and Abolition will be highlighted, as well as her cameo contacts with such Black luminaries as Henry Highland Garnet and Frederick Douglass. The impact of restrictive 19th century marriage law, especially in the context of Crandall’s ill-fated misalliance with Philleo, will be considered as a partial explanation of her relative invisibility.
